vitamins

They are very inportant for good health

Since its discovery in 1906 the use of vitamins has been surrounded by controversy. A
early twentieth century it was known that foods contain fats, carbohydrates and proteins. However, it also had been shown thatthese substances by themselves were incapable of maintaining health and even lives for what they thought that there might be othersubstances essential for life.
Through a complex series of chemical procedures for the time itfinally managed to identify one of these substances.
At first it was thought that all vitamins belong to a type of chemical known as "amino" so coined the term vitamin which literally meansvital amineOver the years it became apparent that this was not true but the name on the public mind.
                                                       What are Vitamins?
Vitamins are organic compounds (ie compounds containing at least one carbon atom) which serve several functions in our body.We do not know all the functions of vitamins in our body. However, we know that some of these are related to metabolism. Others with the manufacture of hormones, neurotransmitters in the nervous system, blood cells and genetic material. Many times the vitamins act by accelerating the body's normal chemical reactions.Reactions without the presence of vitamins not occur or occur would be carried out too slowly to help support life. Almost all of the vitamins must be obtained through diet because the body does not produce them. One exception is vitamin D formed in skin from exposure to sunlight. The human intestinal flora can also produce vitamin K as well as B1, B12 and folic acid but usually the quantities produced and are too small to meet the need for these nutrients.Currently there are 13 substances classified as vitamins. These are divided into two groups, water soluble and fat soluble. The fat-soluble vitamins are vitamins A, D, E and K are stored in the body and are consumed with foods that contain fat. The water soluble vitamins are not stored in the body so it must be eaten more frequently. It is often said that a balanced diet supplies all the vitamins we need. In the U.S., courtesy of a government panel, we offer recommendations as to the amount of each vitamin and mineral that we should consume each day (called RDA or Recommended Daily Allowance). However these recommendations have been criticized for being too generic and not targeted towards an optimal state of health, but merely to prevent deficiency diseases.
